Technology in Moderation

How much technology is too much? As our society becomes more immerse into the digital age of technology with text messaging, social networking and online games just to know a few, how do parents know how much is enough? I recently heard about “turn off week” which encourages families not to have screen time for a week.  This would mean turning off the computers, video games and televisions. It would also include reducing texting time. During this “turn off week” families explore other ways of entertainment. Here are some examples of entertainment:
  1. Take a walk together, explore your neighborhood or a local park or beach
  2. Play a sport together, a game of street tennis, volleyball, catch, kickball, hide and seek or tag
  3. Read a book together, maybe it is a recent movie you watched together or want to watch
  4. Play a board game, remember the classic ones you grew up with or there are so many new board games today with the same theme as popular television shows
  5. Play a card game, there are a variety from Go Fish to Hearts
We live in a digital age which brings us incredible technology which is not going to go away anytime soon. As parents, we need to take the reins in our hands and lead our family to understand that turning off the electronics and having fun quality family time can be much more entertaining and sometimes even more amusing.
